Ebook readers are huge in today’s marketplace. Most people love the idea of being able to store hundreds and thousands of books directly on an electronic device. No more endless piles of books gathering dust around the house, no more bookshelves to buy, and best of all, your books can go anywhere you go.
Ebook readers, however, can be pretty limited. They store your books, and most can get newspapers and magazines. But there’s very little else they do. You may already have a netbook that works wonderfully for checking your email, browsing the net, and for typing up quick documents or chatting via IM or VOIP.
Today’s netbooks come with huge hard drives, often well over 150 gigabytes. They have plenty of room to store thousands and thousands of ebooks.
Luckily you can turn your netbook into a great ebook reader with a few simple tweaks.
You can already read simple.pdf ebooks on your netbook. These books are in the portable document format and are read using the Adobe Acrobat reader or a similar pdf reader. All computers can read this type of ebook. Many ebooks, however, come in different formats.
Some ebooks are in HTML format, which is the same language your web pages are written in. If you’re getting your ebooks from an open source repository like Project Gutenberg you have the option to download in HTML format.
There are also various other formats, many of them distinct to various ebook types, such as Kindle books for the Amazon Kindle and Mobi Pocket books.
Most of these ebook readers have software you can install on your computer so you can read the format on your netbook. However, there’s an option that’s even better for your netbook.
Download a program called Calibre. Calibre is a complete ebook management software. It allows you to import your entire ebook library and browse it at your convenience. It has powerful search functions so you can find exactly which book you want, when you want it.
One of Calibre’s best features is its support for tagging. You can tag a book you like. For instance, you can tag “Romeo and Juliet” with “romance.” Then when you search for the “romance” tag, it will bring up Romeo and Juliet, as well as any other titles you’ve given that tag. This is a powerful way to organize your collection the way you want! You can add multiple tags.
Calibre has a built-in reader so you can read your books directly on your computer – no matter what format they’re in. It also syncs to your device, so if you do have a stand-alone ebook ready it will transfer your books. If you have books in the wrong format, it will convert them to the correct format then send them.
Calibre is available for your Windows, Mac, or Linux netbook (or any computer.)
Now that you have your ebooks managed and have a comprehensive reader installed, you can do a couple of other things to improve your experience.
First, experiment with screen orientation. See if you can rotate your screen so you’re able to read on the screen’s longer axis. You can hold your netbook as if it were a hardback book if you do this.
Also consider dimming the brightness of your screen while you’re reading. This will make it easier to read and it won’t strain your eyes as much as a very bright screen will.
Enjoy your ebooks right on your netbook – and when you’re done reading your machine will be useful for checking your email, chatting with friends, or surfing the web!

Calibre $3.99 Somewhere in the teeming heart of London is a man on a lethal mission. His cause: a long-overdue lesson on the importance of manners. When a man gives a public tongue-lashing to a misbehaving child, or a parking lot attendant is rude to a series of customers, the “Manners Killer” makes sure that the next thing ether sees is the beginning of his own grisly end. When he starts mailing letters to the Southeast London police squad, he’ll soon find out just how bad a man’s manners can get. The Southeast is dominated by the perpetual sneer of one Inspector Brant, and while he might or might not agree with the killer’s cause and can even forgive his tactics to some degree, Brant is just ornery enough to employ his trademark brand of amoral, borderline-criminal policing to the hunt for the Manners Killer. For if there’s one thing that drives the incomparable inspector, it’s the unshakable conviction that if anyone is going to be getting away with murder on his patch, it’ll be Brant himself, thank you very much. |
